What is beef tallow?

What is beef tallow?

Beef tallow is a rendered form of beef fat, specifically the fat that surrounds the organs (like the kidneys) and muscles of a cow. When this fat is slowly melted down and impurities are removed, it becomes tallow—a solid, waxy substance at room temperature and shelf-stable when properly stored.

Key Characteristics of purified tallow:

  • Texture: Firm at room temperature

  • Color: Creamy white

  • Taste: Mild, slightly beefy flavor

  • Smoke Point: Around 400°F (204°C), making it good for high-heat cooking

Common Uses:

  • Cooking: Used for frying, roasting, or sautéing due to its high smoke point

  • Skincare: A natural moisturizer in creams, balms, and soaps

  • Candle Making: Used historically in candles before paraffin wax became common

Tallow is valued for being natural, nutrient-rich, and a zero-waste product when derived from beef processing.
